Now that October has arrived, it’s time to start thinking about Halloween. I don’t know about you, but my favorite part about this time of year (other than the candy) is picking out pumpkins to decorate with my family.
Believe it or not, there’s a science to picking out the perfect pumpkin. You don’t just want to pick out any ol’ gord to decorate, especially if you plan on entering it in our Pumpkin Decorating Contest. You want the perfect pumpkin to be your canvas to showoff your artistic abilities.
So how do you find the perfect pumpkin? Just follow these 5 tips and you’ll be on your way
1. Orange is the New Orange
Whether you’re taking a trip to the pumpkin patch or your stopping by a roadside stand, you’re going to want your pumpkin to be orange all around.
If you’re still seeing green on the pumpkin, that’s a sign that it may not be fully ripe and could lead to difficulties carving or decorating.
Also if you see any other discolorations, that could be a sign that your potential pumpkin’s best days are already behind it.
2. The Power of the Stem
While the body of your pumpkin is what most people focus on, don’t overlook the power of the stem.
You definitely want to make sure your pumpkin has a full stem attached to the pumpkin. Pumpkin decorating aficionados also look for unique stems that can lend to the overall look of their decorated pumpkin.
Oh, and remember, never carry your pumpkin by the stem as you could do serious damage causing you to start your pumpkin shopping all over again.
3. Is There a Soft Spot?
While having a soft spot for puppies wearing Halloween costumes is a good thing (I think), your pumpkin having soft spots is bad.
Once you think you’ve found a pumpkin of the perfect shape and size, take a look carefully all around your pumpkin to make sure it doesn’t have any soft spots.
If you find a single one, put that pumpkin down and look for another one.
4. Look Out For Bugs
Bugs and insects love all sorts of fruits and vegetables, and pumpkins are not immune to these little guys.
If you see any creepy-crawlies scurrying around on your pumpkin, give it a quick look and check for holes that may indicate there is a colony of bugs already living inside.
5. Have a Decorating Plan
If you already have an idea of how you want to decorate your pumpkin before you pick it out, finding the perfect pumpkin will be that much easier.
Plan it out and you should already know the general shape and size that you’re looking for.
