Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and graduation caps are flying through the air. Yeah, that’s right, spring means college graduation.

Time to change out of those sweatpants, put on a nice pair of slacks and strut into the “real world.” One of the first steps in the journey to adulthood is buying a new car.

We’ve compiled a list of all the best tips to follow so you can score the new Kia of your dreams.

1. Take your Time

Maybe you’re tired of driving that old clunker around town, or maybe you’re buying a car for the first time. Either way, don’t rush the process.

Look at as many cars as you want and take notes so you can remember all the important facts.

Car and Driver advises you not to purchase your car on the first visit. Take at least a night to think about your decision. You’ll be driving this new car for several years – you should be comfortable and happy with your decision.

2. Establish a Budget

Before you even get to the dealership, decide how much you want to spend. You don’t want to end up in over your head with payments, especially if you have student loans to pay off.

Also, don’t forget to look for incentives or dealer specials, like the Kia College Graduate Program or the Kia First Time Buyer Program. Sometimes it pays to do your homework.

3. Call Ahead

You usually have to make an appointment to get many basic services like getting your hair cut or car serviced. Why not make an appointment to test drive a car?

This ensures the new Kia you have your eye on will be ready and someone will be available to answer your questions when you arrive at the dealership. Calling ahead or filling out an online form can save you a ton of time.

4. Test Drive

Test driving a new car is like trying on new clothes – how else will you know if it’s a good fit?

Yes, you can look at pictures and read reviews online, but without actually touching the steering wheel or pushing the pedals, you’ll have little idea of how the car drives.

The Test Drive is so important, we dedicated an entire article on the subject.

After you’re done here, be sure to check out these 12 Tips for Taking a Terrific Test Drive.

5. Take a Tour

Once you’ve picked out and paid for your new Kia, don’t rush out of the dealership, eager to drive around town.

First, take some time to get acquainted with your new purchase by getting a tour from the salesperson. He or she can show you how to use the cool new features your old car didn’t have.

Because let’s be real, you just finished college and don’t want to read the hundreds of pages in the driver’s manual.

Now that you have all the tips to follow for a smoother car-buying process, take your new Kia out for an adventure and enjoy the spring weather! Stop on by LaFontaine Kia for a test drive and meet our friendly staff. We’re located at 2027 S. Telegraph Rd. Dearborn, MI 48124. For more information, give us a call at (877) 887-9617.
