Are you considering attending our job fair on Monday September 10th and 11th? Are you feeling a little unsure of what to expect or what to prepare for? We’ve got you covered with 10 tips to prepare yourself for our LaFontaine Automotive Group Job Fair 2018.
1.Arrive on Time
Arriving just before the event begins shows your future employers your enthusiasm, interest and initiative! Employers are there to find individuals who are eager to work for them. Start by showing them your dedication and commitment as you approach them with a smile and a handshake.
2. Bring Your Enthusiasm
Employers often identify enthusiasm as being one of the most important personal attributes an employee can bring to their position. Although a job fair can be nerve-wrecking or intimidating, keep that chin up! Putting a smile on and carrying yourself well can make a huge difference in the way the employer sees you and can improve the way the conversation goes when you approach them. Keeping a positive, upbeat attitude will only help you make the most out of the job fair!
Networking will benefit you in many ways throughout your life. See it as a “social web” and appreciate each interaction you have with others. They could be your go-to person for something you may need in the future, or better yet, they may need you! While waiting in line to speak to an employer, don’t hesitate to exchange contact information, such as a business card.
4. Show Initiative
As mentioned earlier, initiative will make you stand out from the rest. Come prepared with a smile and a firm handshake when introducing yourself to recruiters. Along with that, demonstrate your interest in the company and their job opportunities available by asking questions that relate to the job description you may have already researched online before attending. That is your moment to shine!
5. Ask Questions
Prepare a few questions to ask the employer that reflect your knowledge of their organization. In doing so, you will engage them and stand out from the rest. Employers are not only looking for candidates that are skilled and match up to the qualifications of the job, but they also look for those who truly show interest in the company as a whole.
6. Dress Your Best
Attend the job fair dressed in your best version of business attire. Keep it classy and professional, always. Think “conservative” when planning your attire. From a neatly pressed shirt, to a solid color suit, to dress shoes and minimal jewelry and makeup, it can certainly make a difference in the way you appear to employers. Along with that, make sure to cover any visible tattoos, as most employers do not approve of tattoos in the business workplace.
7. Prepare a Pitch
You may not always have much time to talk to each representative at a job fair. With that being said, practice and prepare for yourself what’s known to be an “elevator pitch.” That is, a 30-60 second speech to summarize your skill, experiences and career goals moving forward.
8. Do Your Research
Going into the career fair, it is important to know who you will be speaking to. Be prepared to speak to hiring managers and possibly even owners of the company. Take time to research the company by viewing their website. Here, you can study their mission statement, core values, available positions and general information before attending the job fair. Along with that, your research may spark other questions or interests that you can bring to the table and mention in your discussion with the employers!
9. Bring Supplies
Come prepared with a folder full of resumes. It is important to provide the employers with your resume so that they have something to remember you by. Be sure to include your name, current email address and current cell phone number. If you have business cards of your own, bring those too!
10. Say Thank You
The onsite interview or interaction that you have with the employer is very important, but so is how you follow up after the job fair itself. Sending a thank you note or email is a great way to reiterate your interest in the company and to remind them that you are a strong applicant. With that, be sure to ask for a business card or contact information from the employer so that you are able to send a follow up message.
Getting a job isn’t always an easy thing to do. By taking the steps to attend a job fair and getting yourself out there, you are on the right track. Be sure to maintain your confidence, keep that enthusiasm going, continue to be professional and show them your interest! With those steps in mind, the possibilities are endless.
